Ports of Jersey minimises passenger wait times with the use of machine vision

New Jersey's airport will leverage CrowdVision technology for passenger flow management purposes. In an attempt to minimise wait times and optimise asset utilisation the airport will use a Machine Vision Enabled Passenger Analytics Solution that is based on already commercially available cameras and computers to analyse passenger experience in real time. The system will provide live metrics on areas in need of attention to eliminate queueing, such as check-in and security areas, to result in effective intervention. The system is also expected to enhance the airport's forecasting and planning practice to increase efficiency and optimise capital investment.

Project Overview

"Ports of Jersey will use CrowdVision to accurately manage its passenger movements and enhance their experience in both real time and over time. CrowdVision’s Machine Vision Enabled Passenger Analytics Solution will be used to help minimise passenger wait times, inform constructive conversations with airport service providers and optimise asset utilisation. It is envisaged that in due course the technology can be used in informing future investment decisions and increasing non-aeronautical revenues.

Selecting CrowdVision for its product excellence and flexibility, Strategy and Development Director for Ports of Jersey, Alan Merry, says “The CrowdVision technology provides our business with live measurable data on passenger flows, processing and queuing times, which improves our understanding of what our passengers are really experiencing when they travel through Jersey Airport. This new information enables us to work with our airline and business partners to make more informed decisions on layout, equipment and resources to enhance the customer experience”.

The CrowdVision solution is a software solution, dependent only on commercially-available hardware (cameras, computers). The software utilises machine vision and sophisticated artificial intelligence techniques to anonymously detect and analyse passenger dynamics in real time. Data can be analysed via CrowdVision dashboards or transferred to customer data storage, to be used in conjunction with other airport data sources, therefore aligning with the vision of many of CrowdVision’s customers.

CrowdVision will provide Ports of Jersey with advanced analytics on the whole passenger population, metre by metre and second by second, delivering live metrics on crowding, queueing and, crucially, asset utilisation in the check-in and security areas, enabling rapid and effective interventions. The data will also deliver value over time in assisting with forecasting, planning, rostering, layout and process improvement as well as capital investment optimisation.

The CrowdVision software is easily reconfigurable as Jersey Airport develops, providing a fully scalable solution, from individual checkpoints through to whole airport solutions. Jersey Airport is served by more than 45 departure points across the British Isles and mainland Europe, welcoming almost 1.6 m air passengers every year."

Technology

"The CrowdVision solution processes live video input from commercially-available off the shelf cameras, and anonymously detects pedestrian movements automatically using sophisticated artificial intelligence techniques. CrowdVision outputs live data about everything from flows, queues and wait times to processing times, occupancies, and asset utilisation. Live dashboards reveal actionable insights to improve real-time operations, whilst accumulated historical data provides reliable evidence for planning and investment decisions."
